Melatonin / Patient Information -
American Family Physician
Melatonin can be used to treat insomnia (difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep).
It can also be taken to prevent jet lag. Beyond that, there is little scientific evidence
that melatonin has a role in promoting health or treating disease.Yasir El-Sherif's

The goal of the Melatonin Breakout Group was to evaluate published data relative to its
quality and consistency for possible EMF effects on melatonin production and its
physiological and health related consequences.

& Cancer
Melatonin vs Cancer - from The Cancer Chronicles #27 May 1995 by Ralph W. Moss,
Ph.D. Some cancer patients are now taking a hormonal supplement called melatonin as
part of their comprehensive, non-toxic cancer treatment plan.
Melatonin Potentially
Useful but Safety, Efficacy Remain Uncertain...
MELATONIN users are the unwitting subjects in a large-scale uncontrolled experiment,
according to specialists in sleep and biological rhythms attending a workshop on melatonin
and sleep at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Md, in August. The
scientists urged the NIH to support a multicenter controlled clinical trial to determine
melatonin's efficacy and long-term safety.

FDA can't assure safety of melatonin - Mar. 5,1996
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The doses available in health food stores may boost levels of the
hormone up to hundreds of times above normal. "There are reports of some people
having depression, becoming much worse after taking melatonin. There are reports of people
developing hallucinations, in particular hallucinatory dreams after taking
melatonin," says Dr. Dan Oren, also from the mental health institute.
CNN investigation prompts
nationwide recall. Melatonin tablets questioned
PASADENA, California (CNN) -- A CNN Medical Unit investigation of melatonin is prompting a
distributor to issue a nationwide recall of tablets that contain only half as much
melatonin as claimed. The hormone is usually used to help people sleep or fight jet lag,
though some people claim it can also help prevent cancer or even delay aging.

Melatonin
- Miracle or Menace?
Dr. Josephine Arendt, an endocrinologist at the University of Surrey in southern England.
says there is good evidence that taking synthesized melatonin tablets helps prevent jet
lag and regulates sleep patterns in some people. Arendt, who said she tested the hormone
on herself before using it on humans, said other claims were not borne out. ``I have
personally taken it since 1981, and I have, in the process, become old, gray, wrinkled and
fat,''
Claims for
Melatonin Unproven - UC Davis (1997)
Eun-Kyu Lee, an assistant professor of clinical neurology at UC Davis Medical Center, has
serious concerns about the safety of melatonin products. Consumers can never be sure about
the quality of unregulated supplements, Lee says. She cites tryptophan tablets, a
supplement that was popular and heavily marketed a few years ago. Impurities in some
batches caused rheumatological and immunological complications,
Melatonin
and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
In another ground-breaking study doctors at Guy's and St. Thomas's hospitals have
discovered a link between melatonin - a chemical which reinforces the immune system - and
chronic fatigue syndrome .
