Making the Changes

Do you like change? We live in wonderful times…the amounts of information available to us often boggles my mind. Anything I want to know about is usually available to me within minutes…all I need to do is log onto my computer and do a search for whatever I want to learn about.

Unfortunately, along with that abundance of information, comes an increasing feeling of frustration…how can we ever know it all, and when information conflicts, how do we know what is correct? It’s hard to make changes when the "authorities" we turn to for our information can’t even agree.

Nowhere is this more evident than in the world of health. Many clients come to me for health information feeling confused by the different diets being advocated as ideal by one book or another, by different exercise programs, or by the vast number of alternative treatments, remedies, vitamin preparations or lotions and potions available to them.

So where do you start? In my health coaching business, I first teach people how to use applied kinesiology, or muscle testing, as a tool for determining what foods and substances are compatible with their unique biology. This puts clients in control. They no longer need to depend on me or anyone else to determine whether a product or food might be beneficial for them.

Next I help people define their needs. What are their goals? Have they developed unpleasant symptoms, or possibly disease conditions that they would like to get rid of, or are they trying to lose weight? Would they like to have more energy? Are they having trouble fighting off colds or the flu when it goes around the office or school?

If we continue to do things the same old way, we usually continue to experience the same results. Making changes means doing things a new way or trying new things. The best way to make permanent changes in your life is to develop new systems.

The biggest problem I run into in my practice is that people are too busy. Their days are so full of activities and commuting between activities, healthful living practices are often ignored. Parents are especially vulnerable. In their efforts to do everything possible to enhance their children’s lives, they often neglect their own health and well-being.

Yet once a good system is put in place, it shouldn’t take a lot of time to maintain it. The increased energy we feel more than compensates for the time we spend caring for ourselves. If we can find the time to learn a system and implement it in our lives, it soon becomes automatic.

Here are some recommendations for making the changes and implementing your own personal system for health.

  1. Learn to use applied kinesiology to determine which products and foods are beneficial for yourself and your family. This is how it is done. Get someone to work with you on this test. Hold your right thumb and index finger together while your helper tries to pull them apart. You will probably be strong enough to hold them together, but what is important is that your helper gauges your strength. Now hold the food or product in your other hand and have your helper gauge your strength while holding it. If you are weaker than before, the product is not good for you.

  2. Make a list of your goals. These can consist of losing weight, increasing energy, building muscle tone, improving sleep, boosting the immune system and many other health and fitness goals. Put them all down, no matter how trivial. Then rank them in order of importance.

  3. Make a list of your beliefs about health. Which foods do you believe are best? Do you believe your cleaning products are safe? What do you believe about dieting? Do you believe healing comes from within, or from external sources, like medicines? Then, next to each belief, write down where it comes from…what authorities are you depending on? Parents? Teachers? Medical research? Finally, evaluate the sources you have recorded. How do you know each authority was right? What evidence do you have? How can you prove to yourself whether each belief is actually truth, or simply a mistaken belief?

  1. Make changes gradually. Humans are generally resistant to change. Something in us rebels if we try to change too many things at once. So pick one thing that you wish to change and do that first. Some people like to start with something that is easy to change so they experience success right away. Others prefer to pick the hardest thing to change (for example quit smoking) just to get it over with. Know yourself and what works for you. If you’re not sure, experiment until you find out what works.

  2. Build a system. Whether we realize it or not, we rely on systems all the time. We have a system for getting ready in the morning…(does it include a high carbohydrate breakfast or a high protein smoothie?) and a system for physical activity…(does it include regular walking in the course of our daily lives or do we drive everywhere possible, take elevators rather than stairs, etc.?).

I believe the most important factor for success is commitment to change. If you can only commit to one small step at a time, that’s better than trying to change everything at once but not really committing to it. If commitment is difficult for you, team up with someone else who will support you in your commitment. You can team up with a friend, a partner, or a professional. Sometimes being accountable to someone else is all we need to help us commit to our goals and make the changes that will lead to healthier and happier lives.
