Skin General - Firming Creams

There are several firming creams on the market but personally I have found Estee Lauders Resilience lift or Clinique's Anti-Gravity Cream to work best. - Edinburgh

Skin General - Dark Circles

How do I diminish the dark circles under my eyes? Am I lacking something in my diet?  -Tammera, Cuyahoga Falls

>> Answer #SG002
Skin General - Dark Circles

Tammera - First look to heridity. Does this run in your family? Secondly, there is a term called "allergic shiners"; dark circles under the eyes being a common sign of allergies. Thirdly, and most importantly, dark circles can signal illness. Check with your doctor!!!  - Editor

Try Physician's Formula cover-up stick in yellow. The yellow color neutralizes the purple 'bags' and creates natural (neutral) skin. Surprising but true! - Washington, DC

Skin General - Menopause - Adult Acne - Melasma

Why is it I'm getting a lot of spots as I never do have them, (I'm 40) on my face and chest? I have other symptoms that relate to the change. Does your skin go spotty if you are on the change? - Suzanne

>> Answer #SG003
Skin General - Menopause - Adult Acne - Melasma

Just as hormonal changes in puberty cause acne to appear in many teenagers, so do the hormonal changes during perimenopause & menopause in many women.  It is also one of the side effects of birth control pills in some women. - Editor

>> Answer #SG003
Skin General - Menopause - Adult Acne - Melasma

I use L-Lysine. It is found in the vitamin section. For some reason a pill that is 1000mg worked better than two 500mg???? But when I feel a pimple coming or if I have one already, I take 1000mg in the a.m. and 1000mg at night until it is gone. It is usually cleared up in a couple days. Hope this works for you! - Becky, VT

Skin General - Melasma - Age Spots

I am only 33 and I have developed brown age spots, and my face is becoming spotty. Aren't I to young to look so old?  What can I do to improve my skin tone? Thanks, Brenda - San Angelo

>> Answer #SG005
Skin General - Melasma - Age Spots

Are you on "THE PILL?" One of the side effects of birth control pills is melasma. Have your hormone levels checked by your gynecologist, see a dermatologist, and if this is melasma, there is medication for it now. Stay out of the sun. - Editor

<< Question #SG006  - Skin General - Skin Welts

My face seems to welt after I just touch it or wash it with a towel. The welts look like somebody came over and scratched me. The welts puff up really big and last a good ten minutes before it settles down. I know that I do not put a lot of pressure on my face. I know that I never had this problem before. Should I be concerned? - Dallas

>> Answer #SG006  - Skin General - Skin Welts

Sound like super sensitive skin, similar to chilblains. In these cases you can write on the skin with your fingernail and what you have written will "welt up" like you describe. Usually not serious; just a nuisance, but you should check with a dermatologist to make sure it isn't a symptom of a more serious underlying condition, and for some advice on handling this type of skin. - Ed

<< Question #SG007  - Skin General - Covering up Cuts

How do you cover a cut on your face without having to wear a bandaid?? - Edmonton

>> Answer #SG007  - Skin General - Covering up Cuts

Look for a "cover stick"...thick makeup base in a lipstick tube. Used for covering blemishes & dark circles under eyes. Hopefully you can match your skin shade. Try to find one marked "hypoallergenic" if you can, since you will be putting it over a cut. Try some of the large drugstores. If you can't find it there, then the dept. stores. - Ed

<< Question #SG008  - Skin General - Melasma

Is there a product I can buy to help melasma with the correction of this condition? If so, please could u send me information or any other information regarding the above. - V.N., London

>> Answer #SG008  - Skin General - Melasma

Recently treatments for melasma have become available, but only through a dermatologist. Your dermatologist will also help you find the root cause, such as hormone changes, auto-immune disorder, etc. There is no real over-the-counter remedy. Only cover-ups and sunscreens to keep it from looking worse, since your "good" skin will tan, but the non-pigmented areas won't, making the contrast even greater. Skin bleaching creams can lighten the dark areas, for less contrast, but otc's are slow-working, and don't lighten the skin enough.

<< Question #SG010
Skin General - Loose Skin - Liposuction

hello i have had liposuction on the tummy and above the belly buttom i have been told that nothing will remove the loose skin - if i do exercises for this area surely it will tighten it up or am i wasting my time? - West

>> Answer #SG010
Skin General - Loose Skin - Liposuction

Unfortunately, you are wasting your time. Exercise tones muscles, not skin. If you had flabby upper arms and the skin seems loose, exercising the upper arm would build a larger muscle, thereby taking up the slack. You can't do this to the abdomen. Frankly, you were probably a candidate for a "Tummy Tuck," not simply liposuction - Ed

<< Question #SG011  - Skin General - Sun - Freckles

Do you know of any creams or lotions etc that will stop freckles from coming out in the sun? Thank you. Your response will be greatly appreciated. - Birmingham

>> Answer #SG011  - Skin General - Sun - Freckles

The only thing that works is a complete blocking of the sun, and the only thing I've ever heard of that does this is zinc oxide ointment...the white stuff you see on lifeguards' noses. Otherwise, wear a big brimmed hat and the highest rated sunscreen you can find. Will help a little - Ed

<< Question #SG012  - Skin General - Dark Spots

I have these dark spots on my face and on my neck Can anyone tell me how to get rid of them? - Columbus

>> Answer #SG012  - Skin General - Dark Spots

"Dark spots" is an extrememly general description, and could be anything from eczema to melasma to "liver spots." You need to check with a dermatologist to find out what they are before you can treat them.- Ed

>> Answer #SG012  - Skin General - Dark Spots

I think it might be melasma. Start to use suncreen and please run to see a derm. It is crucial cause the more you wait the more it worsened. I had it at the age of sixteen ( i don't know where it comes from. I do not stay a long time under the sun, I have never taken pills...) it is no fun. You should take it seriously. See your derm. - Ashanti, MA

I was recently prescribed Protopic ointment for a very resistant case of seborrheic dermatitis on my face. Does anyone know if it is OK to apply sunscreen and/or makeup over the ointment? - Cheryl

>> Answer #SG013 - Seborrheic Dermatitis - Protopic

Ask your pharmacist. He is the expert on drugs, salves, ointments and all prescribed remedies. You are supposed to avoid the sun when using Protopic, so you also need to know even if you can apply sunscreen, will it be enough protection? - Ed

<< Question #SG014  Stretch Marks

im young and ive got stretch marks. ive tried everything. Could not drinking enough cause them. - barnet

>> Answer #SG014  Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are usually caused by the body growing faster than the skin. It can happen on the breasts and buttocks during development, if the development occurs very quickly. The other major cause is very fast weight gain. If your cause is rapid development, and you are young, they will fade in time. Poor nutrition & lack of vitamins & minerals can make you more susceptible to stretch marks.

<< Question #SG016 - Blushing

I have a problem where i blush all the time even if i don't feel embarassed. What can i do to make this stop, or is it something that will eventually go away on its own? - Paul

>> Answer #SG016 - Blushing

If you are a teenager, you will probably outgrow it. You can work to mentally control this. When you feel the blush "coming up and out," mentally think it back down. Picture yourself "pushing the feeling" down and back in. Like the blush is an actual object that you are pulling back in and putting it back to where it came from. Eventually you will be able to catch it and push it back the instant you feel it coming on. Just takes practice. - Ed

<< Question #SG017 - Tanning

I'm 34 and I enjoy tanning.  I tan about 5 months out of the year and am starting to see signs of aging as a result of tanning.  I do exercise
regularly and drink lots of water.  Is there any kind of body lotion that I
can purchase over the counter without spending a ton of money to help keep my skin looking firm, smooth and moisturized?  This would include my hands as well?  They seem to be showing the most aging compared to the rest of my body. - Shelly

>> Answer #SG017 - Tanning

Shelly, you must know by now that tanning permanently damages skin. You've already damaged your skin enough, that if you stayed out of the sun starting right now, it would take 7 years to replace the damaged skin. We're not talking "dry skin." This is deep tissue changes called cross-linking. Like old rubber windshield wipers that become brittle & crack, this is what is happening to your skin. You have a choice. Old tan skin, or pale smooth young skin. Use a tanning alternative to "tan" your skin, and wear sunscreen when out in the sun. And start limiting your time in the sun NOW. - Ed

<< Question #SG019 - Itchy Palms Feet

Suddenly, the soles of my feet and the palms of my hands have begun to itchy like crazy. Why? What can I do besides OTC benedryl? - Loretta, State College

>> Answer #SG019 - Itchy Palms Feet

I also have itchy hands and feet which crack and blister. Dermatologist and Naturepaths couldn't help. Got a cold sore and started using L-Lysine which cleared up my hands and feet. I have been taking about 4,000 mg of L-Lysine daily. Eliminating processed foods (starches that turn to sugar) helps also. - Denise
