I use L-Lysine. It is found in the vitamin section. For some reason a pill that is 1000mg worked better than two 500mg???? << Question #SG006  - Skin General - Skin Welts

My face seems to welt after I just touch it or wash it with a towel. The welts look like somebody came over and scratched me. The welts puff up really big and last a good ten minutes before it settles down. I know that I do not put a lot of pressure on my face. I know that I never had this problem before. Should I be concerned? - Dallas

>> Answer #SG006  - Skin General - Skin Welts

Sound like super sensitive skin, similar to chilblains. In these cases you can write on the skin with your fingernail and what you have written will "welt up" like you describe. Usually not serious; just a nuisance, but you should check with a dermatologist to make sure it isn't a symptom of a more serious underlying condition, and for some advice on handling this type of skin. - Ed

<< Question #SG008  - Skin General - Melasma

Is there a product I can buy to help melasma with the correction of this condition? If so, please could u send me information or any other information regarding the above. - V.N., London

>> Answer #SG008  - Skin General - Melasma

Recently treatments for melasma have become available, but only through a dermatologist. Your dermatologist will also help you find the root cause, such as hormone changes, auto-immune disorder, etc. There is no real over-the-counter remedy. Only cover-ups and sunscreens to keep it from looking worse, since your "good" skin will tan, but the non-pigmented areas won't, making the contrast even greater. Skin bleaching creams can lighten the dark areas, for less contrast, but otc's are slow-working, and don't lighten the skin enough.

Skin General - Loose Skin - Liposuction

hello i have had liposuction on the tummy and above the belly buttom i have been told that nothing will remove the loose skin - if i do exercises for this area surely it will tighten it up or am i wasting my time? - West

>> Answer #SG010
Skin General - Loose Skin - Liposuction

Unfortunately, you are wasting your time. Exercise tones muscles, not skin. If you had flabby upper arms and the skin seems loose, exercising the upper arm would build a larger muscle, thereby taking up the slack. You can't do this to the abdomen. Frankly, you were probably a candidate for a "Tummy Tuck," not simply liposuction - Ed

The other major cause is very fast weight gain. If your cause is rapid development, and you are young, they will fade in time. I have a problem where i blush all the time even if i don't feel embarassed. What can i do to make this stop, or is it something that will eventually go away on its own? - Paul

If you are a teenager, you will probably outgrow it. You can work to mentally control this. When you feel the blush "coming up and out," mentally think it back down. Picture yourself "pushing the feeling" down and back in. Like the blush is an actual object that you are pulling back in and putting it back to where it came from. << Question #SG017 - Tanning

I'm 34 and I enjoy tanning.  I tan about 5 months out of the year and am starting to see signs of aging as a result of tanning.  I do exercise
regularly and drink lots of water.  Is there any kind of body lotion that I
can purchase over the counter without spending a ton of money to help keep my skin looking firm, smooth and moisturized?  This would include my hands as well?  They seem to be showing the most aging compared to the rest of my body. - Shelly

>> Answer #SG017 - Tanning

Shelly, you must know by now that tanning permanently damages skin. You've already damaged your skin enough, that if you stayed out of the sun starting right now, it would take 7 years to replace the damaged skin. We're not talking "dry skin." This is deep tissue changes called cross-linking. Like old rubber windshield wipers that become brittle & crack, this is what is happening to your skin. You have a choice. Old tan skin, or pale smooth young skin. Use a tanning alternative to "tan" your skin, and wear sunscreen when out in the sun. And start limiting your time in the sun NOW. - Ed

PLEASE help me figure out what it is and how to cure it! thank you very much if you do! - holly

Stop scrubbing. The discoloration is pigment IN the skin. It's not ON the skin, unless you have been wearing a brass neck chain! I suggest you use a concealer make up base for awhile. This product will cover everything, including tattoos & birthmarks. Stop scrubbing & stop wearing clothing around the neck. Then see a dermatologist to find the reason behind it. It could be hormones, soap powder residue in your clothing, etc.

<< Question #HR025 - Skin - Adult Acne

I am 26 years old, i have acne on my face, i used a lot of cream, solution, but it is not well what can i do? - Mahtab

>> Answer #HR025 - Skin - Adult Acne

There are remarkable Laser treatments now available, but don't know if they are available in your area. Check with a dermatologist about this treatment. It is a series of treatments, and is not cheap, but the results are extremely good.

>> Answer #HR025 - Skin - Adult Acne

I have found a great way to get rid of pimples is by using milk and ground nutmeg. It sounds crazy and stupid but works. What you do is take some milk and rub it onto your face (where acne is) and yes, any kind of milk. Make sure it is good and wet. Then take the nutmeg and just put all over your face over the milk. The milk makes it stick and makes your skin smoother. Let that dry on your face for an hour. When an hour is up (best before bedtime) go to a sink and brush the loose pieces of nutmeg off of your face and keep the rest on. DON'T wash off. Then you can go to bed and in the morning just wash it off. Continue this for a week. You should see a light result in one day. The more you do it the better your face. In one week your pimples should be gone. But remember. Keep it up! - Kenz

<< Question #SG033 - Make-up base applied daily

Hey um I would like to know... What damage can make-up do if applied daily? - Ellie, NZ

>> Answer #SG033 - Make-up base applied daily

Actually a good quality foundation (or make-up base) can be better for your skin than going without, as long as you have a good skin cleansing routine to remove it each night. Be sure to purchase one with a sun-block included. A make-up base or foundation can protect your skin from the elements, help hold moisture in, keep dirt and pollutants out of the pores, and the sunblock can help prevent wrinkles, and protect from skin cancer.

Mascara should always be completely removed at night, especially at the base of the eyelashes. Failure to do this can result in individual eyelashes falling out "before their time" resulting in less eyelashes. Almay offers a good, hypo-allergenic, non-oily mascara remover. Castor oil is also good, if the oil doesn't bother your eyes. Good for the lashes, but has to be removed completely before applying fresh mascara. - Ed

<< Question #SG035 - Loose Skin & Exercise

Can exercise tighten skin? - Patricia, TX

>> Answer #SG035 - Loose Skin & Exercise

What exercise does is bulk up and lift and tighten
the muscles. This can sometimes have a slight "tightening effect" of the skin due to larger muscles taking up more space and making the skin look a lttle tighter. Same for the face, and the muscles become firmer "lifting" the skin with them. The backs of the arms (bat wings) can be tightened with exercise because that is usually flabby muscles hanging, and not the skin. Exercise can release growth hormone, helping to thicken the skin. But exercise does not directly tighten skin. See SG0010 above. - Ed

My eyebrows are way too small. When I was in 8th grade I plucked them too small and haven't grown them back since. I am too self-conscious about my looks. How can I get back my eyebrows, and quick?   Please help me  - Jenna

>> Answer #HR001  Eyebrows

You're probably out of luck if they haven't grown back by now. You may have to resort to "permanent cosmetics" - tattooing. Just make sure you find a technician who is qualified, and can tattoo the tiny hairs in the proper color, and not thick lines in black. Ask to see photos of their work. Ask for references.   - JP

They probably won't grow back. But, I hear, so people use an eyeliner. - Sophyllia

>> Answer #HR001  Eyebrows

I suggest heading over to a MAC cosmetics store. They have these really great angled brushes which mimic eye brow shape. The people who work there are also VERY prone to filling in anyone's eyebrows-- you might end up looking like a drag queen!! So head over there, ask them to fill in your eyebrows LIGHTLY and it will look natural & good, I hate when people use a liner or even liquid liner-- the line ends up looking trashy and fake. - Erica

<< Question #HR002  Hair Color

I would like to know how to achieve blond from brown hair without problems - Kim

>> Answer #HR002  Hair Color

Pretty simple, actually. Have it done by a professional. Don't go entirely blond all in one sitting. Have it highlighted instead, where they pull the hair through a cap & bleach it in strands. Your professional will also add "toner" to eliminate those "orange" tones that "do-it-yourselfers" end up with. This leaves a very natural look, and you don't get "over-bleached." As time goes by, and it grows out, you will need to have it redone. Since it's impossible to pull the same strands through the cap, over time, your hair will gradually get blonder. This gradual lightening is much easier on the hair. Bleached hair should be conditioned regularly, less exposure to hair dryers, hot sun, and especially to chlorine pools that can turn it to "straw", and sometimes, even a little "green."   - JP San Diego

<< Question #HR004  Hair Color

I dyed my hair with permanent black hair color, I've decided to let the grey grow out which is totally "salt & pepper 4 inches, my hair is long so the rest is black how can I strip the black out? - Las Vegas

>> Answer #HR004  Hair Color

When hair dye is applied, it opens the hair shaft in order to deposit the color. In effect, it bleaches the hair while it deposits the new color. Stripping the color would leave you with orangy "bleached" hair. You would have to professionally have the color stripped, and a color closer to your natural color added. This would be fine if your natural hair was light brown. Since you are "black & white", the best thing to do in your case is to continue to touch up ONLY the roots using a NON PERMANENT hair color until it all grows out. If you avoid dyeing over the dyed portion, the gray will eventually start to show through, as gray hair doesn't take dye as well, and may give up some of the old dye after many washings...if you don't dye over it. - Ed

>> Answer #HR004  Hair Color

Your hair is grey so it will be easier to take the black out. I've seen this case many times before. The easiest and least expensive route is to wash your hair in laundry soap (yes, laundry soap) before shampooing each day.You need to be careful with this because if you use too much at one time, or let it set for too long, it can damage your hair. Also use V05 Hot Oil Treatments like no other. These SHOULD help the fading process even more. If after a few weeks you haven't seen improvement, consult your hair stylist; she/he will help you from there!!  - Good Luck, Brit (Hair Stylist)

<< Question #HR005  - Early Hair Loss

hi i am 19 years old and i am starting to experience hair loss and i was wondering if there is something i can do about it like change my diet (what kinds of food should i eat), or if there are some kind of products out there that you could recommend. Thank you. DZ

>> Answer #HR005  - Early Hair Loss

The first thing you need to do is consult a dermatologist to make sure your alopecia (hair loss) is from early onset male pattern baldness. There are many scalp conditions and medical conditions that can also cause hair loss. It is important you rule these out first.

Diet will only help if hair loss is from malnutrition. Protein deficiency and some vitamin deficiencies do affect the hair growth and quality, but most likely have nothing to do with your problem.

Products that may help if you are suffering from hereditary male pattern baldness are: Rogaine, and check out "More Hair" from http://www.universitymedical.com, a product that claims to help block DHT (a form of testosterone) in the hair follicles. Most of their products are available in retail stores. The list of stores is on their site.

<< Question #HR007  - eyelashes

Do eyelashes ever grow back? I am 15 years old and I wear regular mascara everyday, it's not waterproof and it's not an expired product. However during the day if I do so much as touch my eyelashes, I lose a few. Every night when I wash off my mascara I lose up to five eyelashes. This is really worrying me and I feel as though I don't have as many eyelashes as I used to, but I'm really curious to know if they'll ever grow back. I don't want to be 20 and have no eyelashes. I think they are my most important feature. ~ Dinenno, Woodbridge

>> Answer #HR007  - eyelashes

Hi, my aunt had the same problem with her mascara. It turned out she had an allergy to it. Try switching to another mascara and try not to apply it so much (like in times when you're just around the house). The lashes you lost should come back. We are losing them all the time, I wipe away at least 3 a day (w/o using mascara) and they are always full. GOOD LUCK! - Ashley

Editor note: Yes, she is right...give your eyelashes a rest from mascara whenever you can. It is also very important that you remove the mascara every night--and completely. Make sure you are not leaving mascara at the base of the eyelash. You could suffocate and/ or clog the root. Castor Oil is great for eyelashes.

>> Answer #HR007  - eyelashes

If you are losing more eyelashes than normal with your mascara, it is too dry. Try soft and beautiful by Maybelline or Prescriptives mascara from Holt Renfrew. throw out mascara after a month (that is the life span since as air gets in the product dries up and loses quality).  Don't pump the wand into the tube, trying to get more product, this also dries the mascara. - E. Your hair can be dyed back to it's natural color. Best done by a good professional. Get a recommendation from somebody. The reddish orange tones can be gotten rid of by using a "toner." It adds "green" to the hair to override the red, giving it a more "ash" tone.  - Ed

<< Question #HR010 - Shiny hair

How do some women get really shiny hair? - Dsalas, Athens

>> Answer #HR010 - Shiny hair

It starts with health - a good diet, and not over-abusing your hair with chemicals and harsh shampoos. Make sure you get enough protein and sulphur-containing foods like eggs. Give your hair a good brushing daily; lean over and brush from the back of your neck toward the floor to increase scalp circulation. After shampooing, rinse with white vinegar & water (1 tbsp to 1 quart water) to remove chemical, hard water, and shampoo residues. Use a mayonnaise or jojoba oil treatment if you have dry hair and/or split ends. Never brush wet hair and don't "rub" it dry with a towel. Don't use a hair dryer unless absolutely necessary. - Ed

>> Answer #HR010 - Shiny hair

After you wash the rest of your body, shampoo and condition your hair like you would normally do, and rinse it out with warm water first.  Then, finish rinsing it out with cold water.  This will lock in the moisture in your hair follicles, making it naturally shiny. - Ariane, Surrey BC

<< Question #HR011
Chlorine - Bleached Hair - Colored Hair - Green Hair

I just got my hair highlighted yesterday medium blonde over my brown hair and I have a pool party to go to in 3 days.  The person that did my hair said that the chlorine would turn my hair green.  However, my aunt, who dies her hair blonde very often, says that it's only the algaeside, which isn't put in the pool often.  Which is it?  Is there any limit to how long I can stay in the pool before washing it with clarifying shampoo? - Stephanie

>> Answer #HR011
Chlorine - Bleached Hair - Colored Hair - Green Hair

It isn't the algaecide, it is the action of chlorine combined with a too-high mineral content in the water, the worst offender being copper.

Buy Neutrogena Mineral Sheers powder foundation that's in the handle of a brush.  Buy "Tan" for dark hair; "Neutral" for light hair. Brush your hair straight back and put a headband over your head, around your neck.  Dip the brush tip in some deodorant powder, like "Shower to Shower".  Lay down and hold a mirror above your head, and tap the  brush lightly around your hairline and then work back.  The colored powder should cover over the white powder.  Do it laying down so you don't breathe in the powder, and take a deep breath before you start.  Then slide the headband up to cover the hairline to hold the powder there to soak up the oils.  Hair looks thick and fluffy, and you don't have to wash your hair as  often. - Sarah, NY

I had the same problem and I found that if I used a mousse, like Finesse curl-enhancing and scrunched my hair really well, then blow-dried my hair upside down on low heat, my curls would not be hard. << Question #HR023 - Green Hair - Pool Chlorine

My hair is blonde and I was told that it can turn green if I swim in a chlorinated water. If it DOES turn green, how can I fix it? Is there a special type of shampoo to fix it or?   Thanks a mil! - Lisa

>> Answer #HR023 - Green Hair - Pool Chlorine

The greening of hair from swimming pools is not caused by chlorine. It's caused by the presence of hard metals (copper, iron, and manganese, in particular) in the pool water. Chlorine oxidixes the metals and bonds it to your hair. Copper is the worst offender. The pool owner should have their water tested & keep the metals within normal range.

If your hair is already green, purchase a shampoo that's specially formulated for swimmers and contains either chelating agents (metal removers), such as EDTA (ethylenediamene tetracetic acid), erythorbic acid, and possibly acetylsalicylic acid (same as aspirin, and main ingredient in Scalpicin).

"Paul Brown Clarifying Shampoo" - to remove the Chlorine & the "Green."
"Treat Elite Leave in Conditioner - to protect your hair in the water.
"Ultra Swim" - claims to render the chlorine molecules harmless.
Jason Swimmer's Shampoo (No description available).

Some swimmer's shampoos/conditioners may leave a "coating" on the hair. To remove the build-up, rinse your hair after shampooing with white vinegar and water. Do not over-use these products.
Check your local beauty supply for the above products.

You might try switching to using a depilitory cream instead of shaving for awhile. As far as shaving, shave at night, and don't put deodorant on until the next morning. Use a man's shaving cream in gel form, and don't shave overly close for awhile. Try switching brands of deodorants, and even going without for a day when you are at home & skip shaving. Dust your underarms with baking soda instead. Give your armpits a rest. The dark shadow is from the hair roots being very dark.
