<< Question #HR001  Eyebrows

My eyebrows are way too small. When I was in 8th grade I plucked them too small and haven't grown them back since. I am too self-conscious about my looks. How can I get back my eyebrows, and quick?   Please help me  - Jenna

>> Answer #HR001  Eyebrows

You may want to have your thyroid checked. That is often the reason for loss of eyebrows. - Jean, Okemos

>> Answer #HR001  Eyebrows

You're probably out of luck if they haven't grown back by now. You may have to resort to "permanent cosmetics" - tattooing. Just make sure you find a technician who is qualified, and can tattoo the tiny hairs in the proper color, and not thick lines in black. Ask to see photos of their work. Ask for references.    - JP

>> Answer #HR001  Eyebrows

They probably won't grow back. But, I hear, so people use an eyeliner. - Sophyllia

>> Answer #HR001  Eyebrows

I suggest heading over to a MAC cosmetics store. They have these really great angled brushes which mimic eye brow shape. The people who work there are also VERY prone to filling in anyone's eyebrows-- you might end up looking like a drag queen!! So head over there, ask them to fill in your eyebrows LIGHTLY and it will look natural & good. I hate when people use a liner or even liquid liner-- the line ends up looking trashy and fake. - Erica

>> Answer #HR001  Eyebrows

I once over-plucked my eyebrows too. My mum told me to put some castor oil on a cotton stick and just swipe it on your eyebrows in an opposite direction of the hair's growth. I did that for two weeks and my eyebrows are so thick now :) Hope this helps. - Tanya, Amman

<< Question #HR002  Hair Color

I would like to know how to achieve blond from brown hair without problems - Kim

>> Answer #HR002  Hair Color

Pretty simple, actually. Have it done by a professional. Don't go entirely blond all in one sitting. Have it highlighted instead, where they pull the hair through a cap & bleach it in strands. Your professional will also add "toner" to eliminate those "orange" tones that "do-it-yourselfers" end up with. This leaves a very natural look, and you don't get "over-bleached." As time goes by, and it grows out, you will need to have it redone. Since it's impossible to pull the same strands through the cap, over time, your hair will gradually get blonder. This gradual lightening is much easier on the hair. Bleached hair should be conditioned regularly, less exposure to hair dryers, hot sun, and especially to chlorine pools that can turn it to "straw", and sometimes, even a little "green."   - JP San Diego

<< Question #HR003  Hair - Steam

Does repeated use of a steam room damage the hair? What should I do to protect my hair while in the steam room? - Daiana

>> Answer #HR003  Hair - Steam

If your hair is oily it actually should help, but to protect your hair, just wear a terry cloth turban. - JP

>> Answer #HR003  Hair - Steam

There is really no damage from steam other than FRIZZ! You could use a flatiron spray or serum to control that. It will also act as a barrier between your hair and the steam, therefore protecting it. - Lynn, Ottawa

<< Question #HR004  Hair Color

I dyed my hair with permanent black hair color, I've decided to let the grey grow out which is totally "salt & pepper 4 inches, my hair is long so the rest is black how can I strip the black out? - Las Vegas

>> Answer #HR004  Hair Color

When hair dye is applied, it opens the hair shaft in order to deposit the color. In effect, it bleaches the hair while it deposits the new color. Stripping the color would leave you with orangy "bleached" hair. You would have to professionally have the color stripped, and a color closer to your natural color added. This would be fine if your natural hair was light brown. Since you are "black & white", the best thing to do in your case is to continue to touch up ONLY the roots using a NON PERMANENT hair color until it all grows out. If you avoid dyeing over the dyed portion, the gray will eventually start to show through, as gray hair doesn't take dye as well, and may give up some of the old dye after many washings...if you don't dye over it. - Ed

>> Answer #HR004  Hair Color

Your hair is grey so it will be easier to take the black out. I've seen this case many times before. The easiest and least expensive route is to wash your hair in laundry soap (yes, laundry soap) before shampooing each day.You need to be careful with this because if you use too much at one time, or let it set for too long, it can damage your hair. Also use V05 Hot Oil Treatments like no other. These SHOULD help the fading process even more. If after a few weeks you haven't seen improvement, consult your hair stylist; she/he will help you from there!!  - Good Luck, Brit (Hair Stylist)

<< Question #HR005  - Early Hair Loss

hi i am 19 years old and i am starting to experience hair loss and i was wondering if there is something i can do about it like change my diet (what kinds of food should i eat), or if there are some kind of products out there that you could recommend. Thank you. DZ

>> Answer #HR005  - Early Hair Loss

The first thing you need to do is consult a dermatologist to make sure your alopecia (hair loss) is from early onset male pattern baldness. There are many scalp conditions and medical conditions that can also cause hair loss. It is important you rule these out first.

Diet will only help if hair loss is from malnutrition. Protein deficiency and some vitamin deficiencies do affect the hair growth and quality, but most likely have nothing to do with your problem.

Products that may help if you are suffering from hereditary male pattern baldness are: Rogaine, and check out "More Hair" from http://www.universitymedical.com, a product that claims to help block DHT (a form of testosterone) in the hair follicles. Most of their products are available in retail stores. The list of stores is on their site.

<< Question #HR008  - hair dye fading

i colour my hair with permanent dye but it fades away. what can i do to make it stay ? - Mary

>> Answer #HR008  - hair dye fading

Use hair products designed for colored/dyed hair. Wash your hair a little less often if you can get away with it, and be gentle shampooing. Keep your hair out of swimming pools, salt water. Shade it from the sun. - JP

<< Question #HR009 - Brassy bleach job

I had my hair lighted. She bleached way too much. Now, it looks really brassy!!! I just want to go back to chestnut brown. I don't want to ruin my hair or make it orange or something on the way back what do I do? - Cheryl

>> Answer #HR009 - Brassy bleach job

Your hair can be dyed back to it's natural color. Best done by a good professional. Get a recommendation from somebody. The reddish orange tones can be gotten rid of by using a "toner." It adds "green" to the hair to override the red, giving it a more "ash" tone.  - Ed

<< Question #HR010 - Shiny hair

How do some women get really shiny hair? - Dsalas, Athens

>> Answer #HR010 - Shiny hair

It starts with health - a good diet, and not over-abusing your hair with chemicals and harsh shampoos. Make sure you get enough protein and sulphur-containing foods like eggs. Give your hair a good brushing daily; lean over and brush from the back of your neck toward the floor to increase scalp circulation. After shampooing, rinse with white vinegar & water (1 tbsp to 1 quart water) to remove chemical, hard water, and shampoo residues. Use a mayonnaise or jojoba oil treatment if you have dry hair and/or split ends. Never brush wet hair and don't "rub" it dry with a towel. Don't use a hair dryer unless absolutely necessary. - Ed

>> Answer #HR010 - Shiny hair

After you wash the rest of your body, shampoo and condition your hair like you would normally do, and rinse it out with warm water first.  Then, finish rinsing it out with cold water.  This will lock in the moisture in your hair follicles, making it naturally shiny. - Ariane, Surrey BC

<< Question #HR011
Chlorine - Bleached Hair - Colored Hair - Green Hair

I just got my hair highlighted yesterday medium blonde over my brown hair and I have a pool party to go to in 3 days.  The person that did my hair said that the chlorine would turn my hair green.  However, my aunt, who dies her hair blonde very often, says that it's only the algaeside, which isn't put in the pool often.  Which is it?  Is there any limit to how long I can stay in the pool before washing it with clarifying shampoo? - Stephanie

>> Answer #HR011
Chlorine - Bleached Hair - Colored Hair - Green Hair

It isn't the algaecide, it is the action of chlorine combined with a too-high mineral content in the water, the worst offender being copper.
SEE HR023 Below for more information.

>> Answer #HR011
Chlorine - Bleached Hair - Colored Hair - Green Hair

OK, I have naturally beach blonde hair and when I go in the pool it never turns green. When you have blonde hair and if you don't wash it for like 2 days, it might turn green but not bright green. But if it does turn green it goes right away. - Becky, NJ

<< Question #HR016 - Hair - Greasy Hair

I get greasy hair after less than i day, so you know anything that can stop it? And yes i have tried specially made shampoo's but its not helping! Please reply as soon as possible. - Kate

>> Answer #HR016 - Hair - Greasy Hair

Buy Neutrogena Mineral Sheers powder foundation that's in the handle of a brush.  Buy "Tan" for dark hair; "Neutral" for light hair. Brush your hair straight back and put a headband over your head, around your neck.  Dip the brush tip in some deodorant powder, like "Shower to Shower".  Lay down and hold a mirror above your head, and tap the  brush lightly around your hairline and then work back.  The colored powder should cover over the white powder.  Do it laying down so you don't breathe in the powder, and take a deep breath before you start.  Then slide the headband up to cover the hairline to hold the powder there to soak up the oils.  Hair looks thick and fluffy, and you don't have to wash your hair as  often. - Sarah, NY

Sometimes a B-Vitamin deficiency can cause overly oily scalp & hair. So can hormonal problems. - Ed

<< Question #HR017 - Hair - Highlights in Dark Hair

what would dark brown hair look like with red and blonde highlights? - lena

>> Answer #HR017 - Hair - Highlights in Dark Hair

Terrible. You would look like a punk rocker. Red & blonde highlights in dark hair aren't highlights. They are definite stripes. - Ed

>> Answer #HR017 - Hair - Highlights in Dark Hair

If you would like to get blonde and red highlights and have dark hair i say go for it. I have had dark brown hair all my life and everytime i get my hair colored i put blonde and red highlights into it. The turnouts of it turned out nice. I thought id look like a punk rock my self but the colors blend well with the sun. I say go fot it! - Charlottesville

>> Answer #HR017 - Hair - Highlights in Dark Hair

With dark brown hair, you can't expect to get highlights that are bright. However, getting darker hues of red and blonde can work. For example, instead of a regular bright blonde, try a more rich honey or amber shade that can still be recognized as a blonde. For red, use a darker shade such as carnelian or burgundy. - Bella, Milwaukee

<< Question #HR018 - Hair - Perms - Hormones

I've been getting perms for several decades and the last year or so I've had some not take.  Could it be hormonal (postmenopausal for a couple yrs.) or is the salon's perms?  I'm sick of paying the awful prices for these products and services and not getting what I want.- elaina

>> Answer #HR018 - Hair - Perms - Hormones

It's well-known that perms in pregnant women won't "take." So, it's possible your problem is hormonal. During peri-menopause and menopause, the hair shaft starts to change considerably. You might try one last time, a different salon, different brand perm. - Ed

<< Question #HR019 - Curly Hair - Curl Activator

I have naturally curly hair. I am looking for a spray on curl activator with conditioners. I  have tried most but they make my hair hard & crispy. I want soft curls you can touch.  Thank you - Brenda, Wichita

>> Answer #HR019  - Curly Hair - Curl Activator

I had the same problem and I found that if I used a mousse, like Finesse curl-enhancing and scrunched my hair really well, then blow-dried my hair upside down on low heat, my curls would not be hard. Also, the new texturizers that promise "beach hair" and the same scrunching and blow-drying work really well. If you don't want to buy a texturizer, just put 3 tablespoons of salt in a water bottle, fill the rest up with water, shake, and spray on your hair (about 7 inches away si it won't get sticky), scrunch and blow dry low -heat. make sure to deep condition often and use a strengthening shampoo like Garnier Fructis, healthy curls are pretty curls. - Emily
