Eczema - Abnormal Skin Tone

I had eczema for a long time and nothing helped. One day my doctor prescribed Protopic. I never thought it would help, but Protopic did and I would never use anything else. - Edinburgh

>> Answer #SK030
Eczema - Abnormal Skin Tone

Ask your doctor for betamethasone.  I've used it to control my excema for years. I barely have any flare ups and my skin is clearing up well.
(Editor Note: Bethamethasone is a cortisone deritave.)

<< Question #SK032
Eczema - Child - Elbows - Scalp

I have a 2 year old and she has eczema real bad on her elbows and the back of her scalp and it is beginning to become a sore and have a knot. What can I do about the scalp and elbows? - Turner

Eczema - Child - Elbows - Scalp

When it comes to my son and his eczema, I use Aquafor and a prescribed Elidel medication. I also bathe him in the Aveeno powder. Everything looks pretty good except under his eyes. I am going to take him to the hospital soon if it doesn't clear up. When it comes to your baby's head and elbows, I suggest Aveeno along with the rest of your regimen. I love that Elidel however. It worked wonders for my son. He's 19 months old. I was worried about side effects, but I tell you that none has happened and he's not clawing his flesh off any more. This may not help but I just want to say I feel your dilemma. Monaca, Barkdale AFB

Dermarest is a new hydrocortisone lotion that has helped in the treatment of my toddler, coupled with Eucerin lotion and creme as well as Aquaphor and prescrips.  Also I have heard that Vanicream works for mild cases (but my daughter has chronic eczema, if such a condition truly exists.) - MD

<< Question #SK036
Eczema - Elidel - Expensive

My son has had excema from the age of 5 yrs old. He is now 9 yrs old. We have been to dermatologist, who tell me to wrap him up at night. I think that's cruel. Please as New Zealand prices are expensive for Elidel, could some-one please e-mail me, as I hear it is much cheaper in United States, or Overseas for that matter. I will send money for all costs. Your help for my son would be most appreciated. Kia Ora ra.. Francis. (Reina's mum)

>> Answer #SK036
Eczema - Elidel - Expensive

There are on-line pharmacies in Canada where you can get prescriptions filled over the Internet. Canada is cheaper than the US. Keep in mind, the shipping expense may cancel out the savings, in any case. - Ed

<< Question #SK037
Eczema - Eyelids

I have been diagnosed with excema in my eyelids which causes my eyes to go very red and itchy. The skin around my eyes are also red and itchy. I have been given eye drops but nothing seems to work. I am desperate to stop the itching and red eyes. What can I do?

>> Answer #SK037
Eczema - Eyelids

First step is to try to eliminate the cause. Very often "eyelid eczema" is caused by allergic reaction to air-borne "fumes" such as fragrances including shampoos, face creams, shaving lotions, deodorants, hair sprays, room fresheners--anything at all that has any kind of fragrance. Has your doctor tried Isopto Cetamide eyedrops by Alcon? Do not wear Nail Polish!!!

Eczema - Dry Skin - Fire Ant Bites

I first got eczema at the age of 5. it broke out on the top of my foot the crevices of all my joints from leg to hand. they were filled with puss. i looked as though i was a walking biological disease and i had to stay a way from school for a very long time. my dermatologist prescribes dermovate and betnovate, but i'm tired of using steroid treatments. my skin is thinning out. jus recently i got a series of bites from fire ants and now my feet have round circular sores on them (base) i need some thing to take out the marks. Currently im using coco butter fat and coconut oil but i want something that works faster. My ecxema seems seasonal also. it comes at the change of weather. My skin is extreeeeemely dry no matter what i use. i was prescribed Keri lotion and Lubriderm but lubriderm does nothing at all. this is the worst my skin is in years. i need something that will work fast and take the marks off my skin. ? - kennecia, st. john's , antigua

<< Question #SK039  Eczema - Elidel

My daugther is 14. She developed eczema about a year ago. She is really broke out all over her body.we have been to a dermatologist and he prescribed Elidel and betamethasone. Neither of these has helped. Is there a pill or shot she can take to help. - Jo

>> Answer #SK039  Eczema - Elidel

If topical medications don't seem to work fast enough, then try a 7 to 10 day taper of prednisone. Its a pill that will knock down the rash in a few days. But you can't take it for long periods of time. Its only a quick fix until it can be treated with topical medications. - Tina, Baltimore
Editor note: Prednisone is a corticosteroid (a form of cortisone).
